Xiang Chen was born in Jiangyin, in eastern China. He obtained his B.Sc degree from Nanjing University(NJU). While at NJU, he received lots of awards and published several papers. Xiang came to Northwestern to pursue his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and joined the Center of Quality Engineering and Failure Preventing during the summer of 2012. His research focuses on exploring a near-field optical technique for local detection of high frequency acoustic waves in nanostructures. This technique will create a new tool for reliable nondestructive metrology and failure analysis in nanoelectronics, by enabling quantitative investigation of mechanical properties of individual nanostructure components in a nanoelectronic device, and acoustic imaging of buried nanoscale defects and voids.
